Service and Staffing Update #4

As we continue to work through the challenges presented by the pandemic, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding work of our staff during this difficult period. There’s no question that we are very busy right now and that these are not normal times. Despite these challenges, I continue to be amazed at what our entire team is able to accomplish day in and day out.

As you may know, an Administrative Inquiry titled “Regarding Toronto Paramedic Services” was recently submitted for consideration by City Council this week. This document, as well as our response, are available online and I encourage you to read them.

Staffing is an important part of addressing system and workload pressures. Through the 2022 budget process, we are requesting the addition of 62 new Paramedic positions in accordance with year three of our multi-year staffing plan (adopted by Council in 2019). This year, we also plan to hire approximately 200 Paramedics, including both new positions and to cover for those who have retired or left. Our first 2022 class of Paramedics will begin onboarding on March 7, with three subsequent classes expected to be hired in the following months. We look forward to welcoming them to our team.

In addition, we are now offering to convert all eligible part-time Paramedics to full-time status beyond the ratio requirement. This was achieved in cooperation with Mike Merriman, the Local 416 Paramedic Unit Chair.

I remain extremely proud of the hard work, courage and dedication of our staff who have truly gone above and beyond during this unprecedented and challenging time.

Thank you and stay safe,
