Action Required – 2024 SRBH Annual Certification Education

The 2024 Sunnybrook Regional Base Hospital (SRBH) Annual Certification Education (ACE) will consist of a four (4) hour online pre-course and an eight (8) hour in-person session. Paramedics are required to complete the Annual Certification Education on a scheduled day off. ACE sessions must not start or finish within eight (8) hours of any other shift and must not surpass six (6) shifts in a row.

Key Points

  •  In-person sessions are scheduled from August 19, 2024, to November 22, 2024.
  • Sessions will be offered at two locations, depending on the date selected:
  1. SRBH classroom, 77 Browns Line, Etobicoke
  2.  Toronto Paramedic Services 01 Station classroom, 1300 Wilson Avenue, North York
  • In-person sessions will run from 08:00 to 16:00.
  • Paramedics must complete the pre-course BEFORE 07:00 the day of their in-person session or they will not be permitted to complete the in-person portion.
  • Paramedics can sign up for their preferred ACE date by logging in to the Paramedic Portal of Ontario (PPO) and selecting “SRBH 2024 Annual Certification Education Toronto” in the transcripts section, or by clicking the following link:

Compensation

  • Full-time Paramedics will be compensated with 12 hours of overtime pay or lieu time earned.
  • Part-time Paramedics will be compensated with 12 hours at the applicable rate. The "applicable rate" is either straight time or time-and-one-half depending on the total hours worked within the six-week cycle. For hours in excess of 240 hours within the six-week cycle, the applicable rate will be time-and-one-half.

Late Arrival / Sick

 Please ensure you give yourself time to arrive at your scheduled location. As per SRBH policy, Paramedics over 30 minutes late will not be able to attend and must reschedule. If you are sick on your scheduled day, please book off with an Operations Superintendent and rebook your ACE as soon as possible through the PPO or by clicking the following link:

Accommodations

 The Division will comply with its human rights obligations to accommodate employees who are legally entitled to accommodation. To begin the accommodation process, a formal accommodation request is required and must be submitted using the Request/Document Accommodation Plans Form and in accordance with the Accommodation Policy. Requests for accommodation, including review of accommodations already in place, must be sent to CME@toronto.ca. As a reminder, if you have previously submitted an accommodation request, accommodation plans must be reviewed on at least an annual basis.

Training Opportunity Advanced Care Paramedic

All eligible Primary Care AND Level II Paramedics may apply to the following Advanced Care Paramedic Training Opportunity.

Selection:

 All candidates are required to participate in a written assessment. Successful candidates will be ranked as “senior qualified” to determine their eligibility to enter the course. There are 12 training positions available.

The didactic component of the course will tentatively start on August 19, 2024, with a tentative graduation date of May 26, 2025.

Successful candidates will not be authorized to take vacation or leaves of absence during any portion of the pre-course, didactic, clinical, preceptorship, or certification components of the course. Failure to meet program attendance requirements may result in removal of the student from the program as per educational program policy.

Successful candidates will be required to complete online pre-course modules prior to the start of the program.

During the program your schedule will be changed. Training may be postponed or cancelled based on operational demand. Training will be provided by Toronto Paramedic Services.

Graduates of the program will be required to write the Provincial Ministry Certification Exam tentatively scheduled for June 18, 2025, prior to Base Hospital Certification.

Eligibility:

  • You must hold current certification as a Primary Care or Level II Paramedic under the Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine (Base Hospital) and be in good standing.
  • You must have a minimum of three (3) years paramedic experience, with at least two (2) years at Toronto Paramedic Services at time of the written assessment.
  • You must currently be in good standing with your Commander at your current level of practice. Commanders will use the following criteria to determine good standing:
    • No greater than a Step 1 Attendance Management Letter currently on file;
    • Must have no more than four (4) late occurrences on file within one (1) year from the date of the evaluation request;
    • Must have no significant disciplinary record currently on file [one (1) day suspension or greater]; and
    • Must have no more than four (4) “Paramedic Attitude” complaints on file within one year from the date of the evaluation request.
  • If you are on WSIB/modified duties, you must supply a physician’s note stating that you will be fit for duty (without any restrictions) prior to the start of the course and that you are medically capable of performing all manual and technical skills in the didactic lab sessions.
  • Your Human Resources Information (HRI) file must meet current divisional and provincial standards.
  • You must meet learner requirements outlined by our hospital partners for clinical placement. This may include:
    • Influenza, COVID-19, and/or other vaccination requirements
    • Tuberculin Skin Testing
    • Criminal Record Search with Vulnerable Sector Screening

Re-booking the 2024 Paramedic In-Service Training

2024 In-Service sessions will end on June 25, 2024. Due to limited availability for each remaining session, Paramedics who cancel their 2024 In-Service OT after June 3, 2024 must re-book their session using Telestaff within 48 hours for an available session prior to June 25th. If you do not re-book your In-Service within the 48-hour period, you will be assigned on a regularly scheduled shift.  If you are unable to meet the 48-hour period requirement, and wish to do the In-Service on OT, you must contact cme@toronto.ca.  Information on how to rebook your session can be found below.

Step 1: Select a session using Telestaff.

Booking your session date will be done using Kronos/Telestaff. Instruction to access your calendar and select a session are found in the “2024 In-Service Sign Up Instructions” PDF.

If you have not logged into Telestaff before, please first follow the instructions in the PDF titled: “Employee Self-Service Account Setup” before you attempt to login. This initial set-up must be completed on a City computer.

Sessions start at 07:00

  • Location is 4330 Dufferin Street (HQ), with the exceptions of May 21 – June 7 sessions which will take place at 1300 Wilson Ave. (01 Stn/D1 Hub)
  • No sessions on June 11
  • No sessions on Statutory Holidays or Weekends
  • Your session will be cancelled if you are on WSIB or Modified Duties

Step 2: Complete the online pre-course requirements prior to your session date.

  • If you have not logged into ELI before, click any of the links above to be taken to the login page and follow the instructions in the PDF titled: “Logging on to ELI for First-Time Users”.

  • If you forget your password, use the “Forgot Password?” link on the login page (you do not need access to your City email to recover your password)

Step 3: Attend your in-class session.

  • Full uniform including safety footwear is required for all sessions.  Staff will not be permitted to attend any portion of the CME without full uniform and safety footwear.
  • Bring your APR with you, as you will be fit tested.
  • Pre-course material must be completed before your scheduled In-Service session if you wish to finish at 15:00 hrs.
  • If pre-course is not complete, you will need to complete the content after the in-class portion.

Canadian Paramedic Research Day: May 23, 2024

There’s still time to register for the Third Annual Canadian Paramedicine Research Day on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024 from 7:30 MDT / 9:30 EDT – 15:30 MDT / 17:30 EDT.

 This year’s theme is “Research to Practice: Evidence for Innovation in Paramedicine”, and includes an action packed agenda of world class speakers and research that will inform your practice: Agenda/Programme (canadianparamedicineresearch.ca)

Certificates for CME credit will be available for attending the live event or watching the speaker recordings which will be available on May 30th, 2024 for one year

Registration is free, and can be completed via www.canadianparamedicineresearch.ca. Registration deadline is May 22nd, 2024. Those not able to attend live, can still register to access the speaker recording online after the event.

Training Opportunity – Tactical Training Program

TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

All Level Three Paramedics are invited to submit applications to participate in a training opportunity for the Tactical Paramedic Program. Applicants who successfully complete the requirements will have the opportunity to bid on station openings at the station(s) assigned to the Tactical Paramedic Program.

As a Tactical Paramedic, your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing immediate medical support to members of the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force (ETF) during their deployments. This may also include medical coverage for other police agencies
  • Be willing to operate as a fully integrated member of an ETF Tactical Team under the command of the Team Sergeant and /or Senior Police staff
  • Be willing to work on an Emergency Response Unit.
  • Be comfortable working in a policing environment in all weather, and under demanding conditions which may include but is not limited to confined spaces and/or at heights
  • Be willing to operate as a single Paramedic in demanding emergency situations where back up may be delayed – this requires a high level of self-confidence and practiced Paramedic skills
  • Act as a liaison on behalf of Toronto Paramedic Services – the highest level of diplomacy, tact, teamwork and adaptability is required
  • Operating with a minimum of Paramedic equipment, that you must carry on your person throughout tactical calls
  • Be aware of the potential need for entering high-risk situations, which may be significant at times.
  • Possess and maintain a high level of fitness, as Paramedics are required to re-test and re-qualify for the Tactical Paramedic Program position from time to time, as per the Collective Agreement Article 45.18
  • Toronto Paramedic Services personnel will not perform any direct law enforcement duties, and will not be armed

  • Be currently certified as a Level Three Paramedic at Toronto Paramedic Services.
  • Be in good standing with the Base Hospital and its Medical Director.
  • Attend and successfully complete a fitness evaluation.
  • Attend and successfully complete a multi-agency interview.
  • Possess and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations, and have the ability to work in a multi-agency team, under the command of police personnel.
  • Be willing to have their schedule and/or colour code changed, based on staffing requirements.
  • Be willing to book on at the Tactical Paramedic Program Station, at the beginning of their assigned shift.

Acceptance into the Tactical Paramedic Program will be based on successful completion of the entrance criteria, testing, seniority, as well as the recommendation of the applicant’s Direct Superintendent and District Commander.

Applicants must have the initial and ongoing approval of the Toronto Police ETF Unit Commander (or designate) to be accepted to, and continue working with, the Toronto Police ETF Unit.

Their decision is final and made independent of Toronto Paramedic Services.

Tactical Paramedic Program assignments require development of strong relationships and teamwork abilities.  Consistent and reliable attendance, flexibility in scheduling, flexibility on shift start/end times, and flexibility in vacation times are a necessity.

Failure to meet these requirements may result in removal from the Tactical Paramedic Program.

All aspects of this recruitment process are subject to COVID/Influenza safety protocols and restrictions, which may extend the overall time required to complete the process for all interested candidates.

Testing:

  • Applicants must successfully complete each phase of the testing process, in order to proceed to the next phase of the selection process.
  • Testing dates/locations are subject to change. Applicants will be advised as early as possible if this occurs.
  • There will be no substitutions allowed for any physical testing requirements. Applicants must

successfully pass each phase exactly as listed, in the assigned order.

Phase ‘1’ – Physical Fitness

Physical Fitness assessment consisting of:

  • Complete a 2.4km (1.5mile) Run, in a maximum time of 11:18 min.
  • Complete a minimum of 35 Push Ups
  • Complete a minimum of 9 overhand Pull Ups (no kipping allowed)
  • Complete a dynamic core strength test (plank), for a minimum duration of 3:15 min.

(front plank-45sec., right side plank-45sec., left side plank-45sec., front plank w right leg lifted-

30sec., front plank w left leg lifted-30sec., back to front plank- this completes 1 rotation)

  • Timed Physical Performance course, that may include but be not limited to: a stair climb while carrying a weighted backpack, serpentine pylon course, rescue mannequin drag, confined space crawl, unassisted climb over a wall/impediment, pick up ballistic shield and move backwards @10 meters, components of which may be performed while wearing a gas mask

The above benchmarks represent minimum standards required to pass the test and continue in the selection process.  An applicant’s score will be determined based on their performance in each of the tasks comprising the Physical Fitness assessment.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to exceed the minimum performance standards for each of the assessments, as extra points will be awarded for performance beyond the minimum.

Physical Fitness assessment dates and times, maximum capacity of 12 candidates/day*

The assessment will be held at the District-5 Hub, 5700 Bathurst St.

A Tactical Paramedic qualification list will be established after successful completion of the above testing process, and successful completion of the Basic Tactical Operations Course-Paramedic.
