Winter Safety Reminders

As winter approaches and the weather forecast includes snow and icy conditions, there is an increased risk of slips, trips, missteps and falls. Remember, as any surface can become a hazard it is important to be aware of slippery or uneven surfaces, both indoors and outdoors, and to always be aware of potential hazards and reduced visibility due to severe weather when driving.

To help avoid injury, staff are reminded of the following winter safety tips:

Ensure your footwear tread is adequate, and toques and winter gloves are replaced as needed.
Check windshield wiper blades are in good working order, and an ice scraper is available on all vehicles.
Ensure windshield washer fluid levels are topped up at the start of every shift.
Check running lights and emergency lights are fully functional.
Drive according to the road and weather conditions.
Ensure EcoTraction is stocked on each vehicle and used on emergency calls when needed.
Park vehicles in areas to minimize risk of slips, trips and falls, and reduce the need to carry equipment over obstacles or heavy snow.
When required, and if possible, have allied services or bystanders clear snow for access/egress.
Be cautious when stepping out of vehicles and traveling over potentially slippery surfaces, and use 3-point contact when possible.

Plowing and Salting at Facilities and Stations

Industrial Property Services (IPS) provides plowing services to maintain and clear snow around our facilities and stations. There may be occasions, when ice and snow build-up in key areas around stations or vehicles which may require removal. Paramedics are reminded of their responsibility, as per SOP 03.04.1 (Facilities Management), to ensure that all station entrances and sidewalks are cleared of snow and salted.

When clearing snow or carrying salt bags, please remember to use safe biomechanics and remove/carry only small loads at a time. M-tank (oxygen) dollies are available in some stations and may be used to assist in moving the bags. Scoops are available in all stations to assist with spreading salt.

Please contact a Superintendent if your station requires salt, EcoTraction, shovels, or scoops, or to report any hazards.

Sincerely,
