Staffing Announcement – Commander, Communications


I am pleased to announce that Brayden Hamilton-Smith and James Burgin are the successful candidates for the recent Commander, Communications job posting.

  • Brayden has been appointed to the permanent Commander, Communications position, effective May 1, 2024. Brayden will continue to have leadership responsibility for CACC operations.
  • James will be starting a temporary assignment as Acting Commander, Communications, effective May 1, 2024. In this position, James will be involved in strategic planning, special project development and implementation, and will have leadership responsibility for the Deputy Commander group.

Brayden Hamilton-Smith 

Brayden joined Toronto Paramedic Services as a Paramedic in 2008 and was promoted to Operations Superintendent in 2013. He became an Administrative Superintendent in 2017, where he led the introduction of fentanyl, the development of the Address Flagging program and the creation of the CASE Team as a model for signature/special events. In 2018, Brayden became an acting Deputy Commander. In 2019, he was assigned to the Chief’s Office where he led several initiatives while focusing on improving the integration between service areas.

Since 2022, Brayden has been Acting Commander, Communications, and has focused on implementing positive change and improvements such as the six sector dispatch model, facility expansion, and new uniforms. He is looking forward to going live with the observer program, Determinant Based Response and other initiatives in the future.

Brayden has a Bachelor of Science from Trent University, a Paramedic Diploma from Humber College, a Certificate in Lean Six Sigma from the University of Toronto and a Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from Western University.

James Burgin

 James graduated the Humber College Ambulance and Emergency Care course in 1996 and worked as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) in both Hamilton and Simcoe County from 1997 to 2007. James joined Toronto Paramedic Services in 1999 as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD). He has worked as an EMD, Communications Training Officer, and Senior EMD.

James joined the Leadership team in 2003 as an Acting Superintendent. He has worked as a Shift Superintendent in Communications, Special Projects, and the System Control Operational Support Superintendent. He also worked as an Acting Superintendent in Operations from 2006 to 2010. Since 2018, James has worked as a Deputy Commander on the Yellow Shift, and most recently in an administrative capacity for the Deputy Commander group.
